My name is Philippe and I'm a member of the IECC Staff and together with some current Staff members we formed an IECC Team to enter the DESC Open 2013; we're the IECC-4 Team. I was asked if I was interested in annotating some of my games, and I have chosen a game from that Team event.
[Event "T113934W"] [Site "IECC"] [Date "2013.04.01"] [White "Heyvaert, Philippe"] [Black "Burgey, Wolfgang"] [Result "1-0"] [WhiteElo "2034"] [WhiteCountry "BEL"] 1.d4
[My main opening move for White, I suck at Ruy Lopez :-). So I made the option not to play the move 1.e4 with White in any of my games in this team event, after 1... e5, I usually reply with 2.Bc5. I like the more difficult positional play (1.d4) anyway. Let's find out what my opponent is going to throw at me...]
1... d5 2.c4 c6
[Aha! The Queen Gambit Declined: Slav - Bring it on mate :-)]
[I've been expecting 3.... dxc4 4.e3 Be6. With this move he's giving me a slight advantage += Where's my opponent heading for? I wonder...]
[Strange... Slav normally is 4... dxc4 5.Bxc4 b5. So there are 2 possibilities: my opponent is very very very good or he has made an error, scales are tipping towards option 2.]
[Not bad in my opinion, it's always good to put some extra pressure on the Queen side. It's almost never bad to play a normal development move in an unknown situation.]
5... b5 6.cxd5 Bxf3 7.gxf3 cxd5 8.a4
[Here we go! This guy is getting a little bit too creative here. Let's respond with an offensive move of my own.]
[This is the best option for Black right now. After 8... bxa4 9.Qxa4+ Nd7 10.Qa5 Qxa5+ 11.Rxa5 and White is getting a clear advantage on the board.]
[Free pawn... in times of crisis like these I can't refuse :-)]
9... Nc6 10.Qc3 Qd6?!
[10... Qc7 is better in my opinion: possible continuation 11.Na3 e5 12.Nc2 exd4 +=.]
[I've got make a choice... Knight or Bishop? Good development is the key in this position. So my choice was 11.Bd2. My opponent has to play 11... e5.]
11... e5 12.dxe5 Nxe5
[12... Qd7? is bad after 13.f4 Bb4 14.Bh3 +- White has a clear advantage.]
[It doesn't matter though, f4 is the move for White!]
[13... Nd7 isn't much better 14.Qa5 Ngf6 ±. White has still some work to do but Black will get in trouble, the semi open g-file isn't good for Black.]
14.Ke2 d4 15.Qd3 Rd8??
[15... Nxd2 16.Nxd2 that's what I expected. 15... Rd8?? It's a piece for free, so I'm taking it...!]
[My opponent resigned at this point, next to being in bad position he started to have time issues. This tournament has a 10/30 time limit, at this point he had 9 days left to reach move #20. His average thinking time was about 7 days for one move.]
